We’ve known for a few months that Darth Vader will return in some guise for Star Wars spin-off Rogue One. Now we finally have our first glimpse of the Force’s arch manipulator in action, curtesy of a new trailer released today.
The two-minute teaser – released during the Rio Olympics – concludes with a shot of Vader and the sound of his trademark wheeze – confirming James Earl Jones will return to voice the character for the first time since 2005’s Revenge of the Sith.
His presence is just one of the many threats Felicity Jones and her ragbag crew will have to overcome in order to succeed in stealing plans for the Death Star, with Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerra warning of “the world is coming undone” as an Emperial vessel looms into view.
But while the Gareth Edwards-directed spin-off looks set to be grittier than previous instalments, there’s still plenty of nostalgic hat-tips for Star Wars fans to enjoy, including a new droid voiced by Alan Tudyk that bears more than a few similarities with a certain C3PO.
Set before the time of A New Hope, the movie stars Jones as Jyn Erso, who is tasked with leading a team, which includes Whitaker, Donnie Yen and Diego Luna, to steal plans for the Death Star.
Star Wars: Rogue One is out 16 December.
